Irish dance: Taller de Nuala Irish Dancers

Tenía ganas de probar como era eso del baile irlandés en primera persona (ya había visto algún espectáculo y algunos vídeos), y vi la gran oportunidad: taller de dos días en Nuala Irish Dancers para principiantes. Así que como no estoy para perder el tiempo (me aproximo vertiginosamente hacia los 30) pues me apunté, y de paso, convencí a una amiga :). Pues el caso es que ha merecido mucho la pena, y que quiero más... a la idea de taller piensas que será suave, pero qué va, tengo las piernas destrozadas, pero me lo he pasado muy bien y he aprendido muchas cosillas, hemos bailado ceilis, algunos pasos de zapato blando, algunos muy básicos de zapato duro,... muy completo y divertido, y la gente muy maja, tanto los asistentes como las profes, todo buen rollo, como en la propia Irlanda :). Y viendo las piernas que tenía la gente que ya llevaba tiempo haciéndolo, la verdad es que te pones bastante en forma. Así que he escrito una nueva línea en mi lista de cosas que hacer antes de los 30, y eso es, aprender danza irlandesa.

I wanted to try how was the irish dance (I had watched some videos and a show), and there it was my chance: a  two days workshop with the Nuala Irish Dancers. So, as I cannot waste my time (I'm very close to my 30s), I  joined, and I brought a friend :). It was a really worthy experience, and now I want more,... the idea of a workshop can make you think it will be soft, but no way, I cannot move myself, and I had a really nice time and I learned a lot of things, we danced ceilis, some soft shoe steps, some very basic hard shoe steps,... very complete. And the people where really nice, teachers and students, very good atmosphere, as it would have been in Ireland. Seeing the legs of the people who usually dance, it seems to be very atletic. So I wrote a new line in my list "things to do before my 30s" and that is, learning irish dance.

Barcelona Irish Pubs: Lennox, the pub

El viernes estaba celebrando mi cumpleaños en el Michael Collins cuando un amigo se pidió una Magners de pera, la probé, y descubrí mi nuevo vicio... así que después de dos días sin beber mi deliciosa Magners (por cierto, ¿alguien sabe dónde comprarla en Barcelona?), y al pasar hoy delante de un pub irlandés por la Barceloneta (c/Pla de Palau,9), no he podido evitar pedirme una, aunque esta vez sólo había de manzana (y no es lo mismo, pero no está mal tampoco). Recordaba este pub, pero con otro nombre, el Fastnet, había ido un par de veces y estaba bastante bien, pero hoy encontré que había cambiado de nombre (y de precios...). El Lennox es un pub bastante pequeño con una decoración chula y con camareras guiris... hasta ahí bien pero normal... no tiene nada especial. El caso es que me iba pareciendo un buen sitio donde hacer una parada si estás por la zona... hasta que vi el precio... mejor no lo digo, os lo enseño. Y es por ese robo que nunca más volveré a este pub.

Last Friday I was celebrating my birthday at Michael Collins, when one of my friends asked for a peer Magners (irish cider), I tested it, and I discover my new adiction... so after two days without drinking my delicious Magners (somebody knows where to buy it in Barcelona?), and going beside an irish pub at Barceloneta (c/Pla de Palau, 9), I couldn't avoid to ask for a Magners, even they only had apple Magners (it's not the same, but not bad either). I remembered this pub, but with another name (Fastnet), I had been there a couple of times, and it was ok, but today I found out they had change their name (and the prices...). Lennox is a quite small pub with nice decoration and english speaking waiters... until this moment it was ok, nothing special. The thing is, I was thinking it was a good  place to go it you're around until I saw the bill... better I show you. And because of that, I won't ever go back.

¿5,90€ por una pinta de Guinness?¿6,5€ por una Magners (en el Michael Collins vale 5,5€)?¿estamos locos?

Barcelona Irish Pubs: Kitty's

Ayer había planeado ir al Kitty's, luego me enteré que era la final de la liga (no me gusta mucho el fútbol), y cuando fuimos estaban todas las mesas reservadas, así que mi gozo en un pozo :(,... finalmente fuimos a otro bar, a cenar, y después de cenar volvimos al Kitty's y esta vez si había sitio :). El Kitty's es un bar al que tengo especialmente cariño, ya que cada año organizan una fiesta de Saint Patrick's al aire libre con conciertos, bailes y mucha cerveza, y a mí me encanta, y ya sólo por eso, no puedo quejarme de este bar. Este pub está en la calle Nau Santa María, 5, muy cerquita de la Illa, aunque bastante alejado del bullicio nocturno. Es un bar bastante grande, con una decoración bastante chula y que al igual que el Michael Collins, debe su nombre a un personaje histórico irlandés. Kitty O'Shea fue la compañera sentimental de Charles Parnell, líder político nacionalista irlandés. Volviendo al tema, el Kitty's es un bar que a mí me gusta bastante, es muy acogedor, los camareros son irlandeses, tiene una decoración muy irlandesa, y tiene pequeñas cosillas que lo hacen diferente, como una estantería de intercambio de libros (que es algo que no cuesta mucho y le da su qué), y que los jueves hay música celta en directo. Aparte emiten todos los partidos (más de lo mismo que otros pubs) y tiene una carta bastante amplia (que no barata) para comer. En resumen, que sí estás por la zona, es un buen pub al que pasarte para tomarte una pinta.

Yesterday I had planned to go to Kitty's, then I realized it was the league final match (I don't really like football), so when we arrive, all the tables were booked, so we needed a new plan :(... finally we went to another bar, then we had dinner, and after dinner we went back to Kitty's, this time there were some tables free :). Kitty's is a pub I particularly love, because every Saint Patrick's day they organize an event with live  music, dance and lots of beer, and I love it, just because of that, I love this pub. This pub is at street Nau Santa María, 5, very close to the shopping centre l'Illa, but far away from all the night crowded pubs. It's pretty big, with nice decoration and as Michael Collins, their name is a historical irish name. Kitty O'Shea was the sentimental partner of Charles Parnell, nacionalist political irish leader. Going back to the pub, Kitty's is a pub I love pretty much, it's cosy, with irish waiters, irish decoration and those little things which make it a special place, as a book enchange shelf (something really cheap to do and which gives it this special touch), and they have live music on Thursdays. They broadcast all the matches (same as other pubs), and they serve food (quite expensive). In conclusion, if you're around, it's a nice place to go fot a pint.

Concerts: Irish Corner

Para los fans de la música tradicional irlandesa, este domingo podremos disfrutar de un referente de este género de música de Barcelona: los Irish Corner. Cómo no, tocarán en un pub irlandés, en mi querido Michael Collins... :) Y empieza a las 20h, una hora aceptable para irse a dormir prontito.

For the irish trad music fans, next Sunday we will be able to enjoy one big band of this genre at Barcelona: Irish Corner. As you can predict, they are playing in an irish pub, my beloved Michael Collins... :) And they start at 8pm, quite early for the ones who get awake early.

Barcelona Irish Pubs: The George Payne

El otro día quedé con una amiga que curiosamente también es medio irlandesa, así que que mejor lugar para quedar que en un pub irlandés :) como me dijo que quedásemos en Urquinaona, se me ocurrió que podríamos ir al George Payne, que está en la misma plaza, y aunque no me gusta, así lo tachaba de mi lista para el blog. El George Payne es un pub muy grande, de hecho fardan de ser el mayor pub irlandés de Barcelona... La decoración es mediocre, aunque los asientos son cómodos, pero aparte de que las mesas son de madera, no tiene muchas referencias irlandesas en su decoración más allá de la entrada. Tiene muchos camareros, aunque creo que ninguno es irlandés, y que se dedican a estar allí haciendo presión para que te vayas y dejes la mesa o consumas (lo típico de quitarte el vaso en cuanto te lo has acabado), que es algo que no soporto de un bar. El precio, normal, unos 5€ por pinta. Encima, el día de Saint Patrick tuvieron todo el morro de cobrar entrada... ¿entrada por qué?¿por entrar en un pub? Eso sí, en los 10€ de entrada incluían una pinta gratis, (¿¿gratis??) y un gorro de Saint Patrick (que te lo regalan en cualquier pub ese día).

Por lo que es un bar que, para mí, deja mucho que desear, siendo su única ventaja que es muy grande...

The other day I was meeting a friend who is also half irish, so we couldn't find a better place to go than an irish pub :) as we were meeting at Urquinaona, I thought we could go to George Payne, located at the Urquinaona square, and even if I'm not a big fan of this pub, in this way I could write about it for the blog. The George Payne is a huge pub, in fact, they announce themselves as the biggest irish pub of Barcelona... The decoration could be better, but the seats are confortable, the tables are made of wood, and they don't have many irish references apart of the entrance. They have a lot of waiters, any of them irish, and they stand there looking how you drink, taking your glass when you finish your beer, making you feel as you should go at that moment, thing I really hate. The price is ok, 5€ a pint. On Saint Patrick's day, they were charging 10€, for what? For entering into a pub? But, the entrance included a free pint (free?) and a Saint Patrick's hat (which you can get for free in any other pub). 

So, in conclusion, it is a pub with many things to improve, with the only advantage of being very big...

Barcelona Irish Pubs: McCarthy's

El segundo pub de la noche del viernes fue el McCarthy's, también en Via Laietana, en el número 44, un poquito más cerquita de Urquinaona. Cuando pasas delante del McCarthy's, no te da mucho la impresión de que sea un pub irlandés, no por la entrada, que sí, que es verde y con rollito irlandés, pero un tío repartiendo flyers en los que dice que hay cóctels a 3,5€ muy irlandés no suena. De todas formas, nos animamos, ya que estábamos,... Cuando entras no da la sensación de pub, da más la sensación de bar de copas, la gente que estaba allí parecía haber entrado por la oferta de cóctels a 3,5€, más que por ir a un pub. Tiene una decoración más moderna, con cuatro tréboles por ahí colgados y una bandera de Irlanda, no es un ambiente muy acogedor la verdad. Hay dos camareras guiris, aunque no irlandesas, a las que no parece que el dueño (que si que es irlandés) les haya enseñado a tirar una pinta, ya que la tiraban rápido y mal, eso sí, con un trébol dibujado en la espuma, es decir muy bonito, pero mal. Las pintas están a 4,9€, igual que en el Dunne's, y retrasmiten partidos (como el resto de pubs), pero poco más. En mi opinión, el dueño de este pub debería pararse unos segundos a reflexionar si quiere un bar de copas o un pub.

The second pub of friday night was the McCarthy's, also located at Via Laietana, but at the number 44, a bit closer to Urquinaona. When you walk in front of McCarthy's, you don't really think it is an irish pub, it's not because of the entrance, which is green and quite irish, but a guy giving discounts for the cocktails (3,5€ each) doesn't sound very irish. Anyway, as We were there, we went in... When you walk inside the pub, it looks more like a cocktails bar rather than a pub, the people inside looks to be there for the offers, rather than for being in a pub. Their decoration is quite modern, with a few shamrocks on it and an Ireland flag, not a very cozy environment. There are two foreign waitresses, not irish, who doesn't seem to know how to serve a pint, the owner of the pub (who is irish) could have teach them. They were serving the pints two fast, with a shamrock drawn on it, so yeah, it was nice, but badly served. The pints cost 4,9€, same as Dunne's, and they broadcast some matches (as the other pubs), but anything else. In my opinion, the owner of this pub should think about if he wants an irish pub or a cocktail bar.

Barcelona Irish Pubs: Dunne's

El pasado viernes tenía ganas de visitar un nuevo pub, de hecho, hacía mucho que no escribía sobre un pub, y ya tocaba. Así que a falta de uno, visité dos pubs, y con esto acabé con los pubs de Via Laietana (podía haberme animado y haber ido también al George Payne en Urquinaona, pero como no me gusta mucho, no quería cerrar así la noche, pero ya iré para escribir sobre él).

Al primer pub que fuimos fue al Dunne's, porque había leído cosas guays por internet, y tenía más ganas de ir que al otro (luego escribiré sobre él). El Dunne's está en Via Laietana, 19, es un pub muy grande (incluye una terracita en la parte trasera), muy bien decorado, y con asientos muy cómodos (esto hace que te quieras quedar más y más en el pub), los camareros son irlandeses y encantadores (aunque esto viene implícito en la condición de irlandeses :)), y la decoración chulísima, tienen fotos de irlandeses, algunos retratos, señales de allí,... Las pintas están a 4,9€ y muy bien tiradas, aparte de eso tiene una amplia carta de comida, aunque algo cara, pero incluyen opciones vegetarianas (cosa que no había visto en ningún otro pub antes, así que punto a su favor), también se puede ir a desayunar, incluyendo la famosa porridge, una especie de papilla de avena irlandesa que nunca he probado (ni ganas), pero igual alguien se anima :). Retrasmiten todos los partidos del mundo mundial, como el resto de pubs, y según ellos tienen música en directo, aunque no logré averiguar cuando. El publico es 80% guiri, lo que le hace ganar muchos puntos (y para quien esté aprendiendo inglés, puede servir como inmersión lingüistica ;)).

Last Friday I was up to discover a new pub, in fact, it's been a while since the last time I wrote about a pub. I didn't visit a pub, but two, so then I was done with Via Laietana pubs (I could have also gone to George Payne at Urquinaona but, as I don't really like it, I prefered to leave it for another moment).

The first pub we went to was Dunne's, as I had read cool things about it on the internet, so I prefered to go to this one rather than the other one (I'll write about it later).  Dunne's is located at Via Laietana, 19, is a big pub (with a terrace on the backyard), very well decorated, with confortable seats (that makes you wanting to stay more and more), irish and lovely waiters (well, all irish are lovely though :)), their decoration includes irish writers pictures, some drawings and signs from Ireland,... The pints cost 4,9€ and very well served, also they have a long menu for food, a bit expensive, but including vegetarian options (something I hadn't seen in any other pub, so good point for them), you can also go there for breakfast, including famous porridge, a kind of cream of oat I've never tasted (and I don't want to), but maybe someone wants to try :). They broadcast all the matches of the whole world, as the other pubs, and they say they have live music but I couldn't get to know when. The clients are 80% foreigners, which helps to get the irish environment (and if someone wants to practice some english, it can work ;)).

Ireland national symbol: the harp

Estoy muy contenta porque me han regalado un arpa por mi cumpleaños (aunque aún no ha sido), y es que en mi proceso de irlandación profunda era indispensable incorporar un instrumento de música irlandés, ya que los irlandeses si algo saben hacer bien, eso es música.

Es un instrumento que me encanta por varios motivos, primero porque tiene un sonido espectacular y como de paz, aparte es un instrumento que se suele tocar solo (no se ven muchos grupos que incorporen un arpa) y porque curiosamente se suele ver tocado principalmente por mujeres. Siempre recordaré a la arpista pelirroja de Grafton Street y como podía quedarme escuchando su música durante el rato que hiciera falta.

Además el arpa tiene un gran significado cultural y es que es el símbolo nacional de la República de Irlanda (así como el de Guinness y Ryanair).

Os pongo un vídeo de un poco de música irlandesa tocada con arpa (cuando yo sepa hacerlo igual de bien, igual pongo uno mío:) ).

I am so happy because I have received a harp for my birthday (even that my birthday has not happened yet), because in my deep irishzation process it was mandatory to incorporate an irish instrument, because what irish people do best, that's music. 

The harp is an instrument I love for several reasons. Firstly, because it sounds so good and its sound is so peaceful, also it is an instrument you can see played on its own, not having to be part of a band (not many bands have a harp between them) and secondly, because it is an instrument mainly played by women. I will always remember the ginger harpist woman of Grafton street and how could I spend all the time possible listening to her.

Also, the harp has big cultural significance, as it is the national symbol of the Republic of Ireland (and also the symbol of Guinness and Ryanair).

Irish movies or movies set in Ireland: Michael Collins

Hacía mucho tiempo que quería ver esta peli, y la verdad, me ha encantado. A pesar de ser muy fan de Irlanda y estar bastante puesta en la historia de Irlanda, no tenía muy claro el papel determinante que había jugado Michael Collins en ella, y es un papel crucial. En esta peli puedes enterarte bien de su papel en la historia así de como fue la revolución que finalmente conseguiría la república, y no os cuento nada más. Me ha gustado mucho mucho, y creo que es una peli esencial para alguien que quiera saber un poco mejor que pasó entonces.

I have been wanting to watch this movie for a long time, and to be honest, I love it. Even if I'm a huge fan of Ireland and its history, I wasn't sure of the so important role of Michael Collins on it. In this movie, you can notice about his important role in the history of Ireland and in the revolution which ended with the republic, and I can't say anything else. I really like this movie , and I think it is a essential movie to watch for someone who wants to have some knowledge about it.

Barcelona Irish Music Bands

Si hace poco os hablaba de grupos irlandeses no muy famosos, hoy quería hablaros de grupos españoles que hacen música con influencia irlandesa... y es que el espíritu irlandés está extendido en todo el mundo, y Barcelona no iba a ser menos,... el buen rollo irlandés es fácilmente contagioso :)

A few days ago I was talking about not very famous irish bands, and today I want to talk about spanish bands playing irish music... Because the irish spirit is spread all over the world, and so it is in Barcelona... The good irish vibe is quite contagious :)
