Barcelona Irish Pubs: O'Hara's

No soy muy fan de la calle Ferran (una calle que sale de las Ramblas) porque sus pubs están muy dedicados al turismo, dada su localización, por lo que no son sitios muy acogedores, suelen ser caros y sin tener nada especial.

El O'Hara's está situado en la calle Ferran, es un pub mediano con mesas de madera y con camareros latinoamericanos. Yo tenia ciertas esperanzas en él, al llamarse igual que una marca de birra irlandesa, pero nada, más de lo mismo. Es decir, un pub carillo y sin nada especial, la música, pues hits musicales, nada de música irlandesa, no recomendable.

I am not a huge fan of the street Ferran (a street close to las Ramblas) because its pubs are so focused to the tourists, because of its location, so they are not very cosy places, they are usually expensive with nothing special.

The O'Hara is located at Ferran street, it is a medium size pub with wood tables and the latinoamerican waiters. I had some hopes on it, because it is named as an irish brand beer, but no, it is the same than the others. So, it is a expensive pub with nothing special, the music they play are radio hits, no irish music at all not advisable.

Irish pubs in Barcelona: one thousand visits

Cuando empecé a escribir este blog allá por marzo lo hice por... Bueno, no sé muy bien por qué, supongo que porque a mis amigos no puedo darles tanto la chapa con cosas irlandesas, empecé a escribir de pubs, luego de otras cosas, pubs de otros sitios, a traducirlo al inglés (está en proceso aún) y quedó esto. Y ya tiene más de 1000 visitas, que no sé si es mucho o poco o normal, pero es un número bonito al fin y al cabo.

Quería daros las gracias a todos los que me leisteis alguna vez, os bebisteis una cerveza conmigo o soportasteis mis charlas sobre mi isla verde, porque habéis contribuido a que siga con esto (para bien o para mal). Y dicho esto nos vemos en los pubs, donde sea, pero con una pinta delante :).

Y como resumen:

When I started writing this blog in march I did it because... Well, I don't really know why, I guess it was because I can't talk that much to my friends about irish things, I started writing about pubs, then about  other things, pubs from other places, translate it to english (in process now) and so this is the result. Now it has more that 1000 visits, I don't know if it is too much or too little, but it is a nice number at the end.

I want to thank you all who read me sometime, or drunk a pint with me or hold my interminable talks about my green island, because you have contributed in someway with me to continue with it (in a good or a bad way). So, once I've said that, see you in the pub, wherever, but with a pint :).

Valencia Irish Pubs: Finnegans of Dublin

El segundo pub que visité en Valencia fue mucho mejor, y es que fui con un nativo (de Valencia, no de Irlanda). El Finnegans of Dublin está en la plaza de la Reina (¿de qué reina? ni idea). Es un pub bastante grande, con terracita, techos altos, decoración de madera y con motivos irlandeses. Tienen música en directo, retransmiten partidos y hacen intercambio de idiomas. Tienen sabores de Magners que no había visto nunca y las pintas valen 4,9€, lo normal para estar donde está, vamos que en este pub si repetiría. Después intenté ir el domingo por la mañana al Saint Patrick's pub y al Sally O'Brien, pero estaban cerrados :(.

The second pub I visited while I was in Valencia was much better, and it is because I went with a native (from Valencia, not from Ireland). The Finnegans of Dublin is located at plaza de la Reina (which queen? No idea). It is a pub quite big, with a terrace, high ceilings, wood decoration with irish motif. They have live music, they broadcast matches and they offer language exchange. They have different flavours of Magners I hadn't seen before and the pints cost 4,9€, the normal price for where it is, so I would repeat at this pub. Later, I tried to go on Sunday morning to Saint Patrick's pub and Sally O'Brien, but they were closed :(.

Valencia Irish Pubs: Saint Martin

Este verano he desconectado un poquillo, pero porque estuve de vacaciones. Primero estuve por Asturias, pero allí no vi ningún pub irlandés, aunque en casi todos servían Guinness (si alguien sabe de alguno por allí, que me diga, que igual es que me busqué unos guías muy malos :)), y después he estado en Valencia, aunque muy brevemente. El caso es que en Valencia descubrí un concepto nuevo, el urban irish. Fuimos a un pub llamado Saint Martin a tomar una pinta mañanera y debajo ponía urban irish, así que aunque íbamos a la terraza, me asomé a ver que coño era eso, pero nada, un bar mal decorado, aunque grande, donde retransmiten partidos y situado en una zona bastante guiri, un camarero español y precios normaluchos, para los otros pubs que ví, este se queda en mediocre. Así que, en conclusión, lo de "urban irish" hay que depurarlo.

This summer I've been disconnected, but because I was on holidays. Firstly I was in Asturias, but there I couldn't find any irish pub, but in almost all the pubs they served Guinness (if someone knows about an irish pub over there, just tell me, because maybe I found very bad touristic guides :)), and afterwards, I was in Valencia, but just for a weekend. In Valencia I could discover a new concept, the urban irish, so as we were going to the terrace, I went inside to see what the fuck was  that, but I just found a bad decorated pub, but big, where they broadcast football matches and located in a very touristic area, a spanish waiter and normal prices, for the other pubs I saw, this one is just ok. So, in c
conclusion, they should work on the "urban irish".

Barcelona Irish Pubs: The Quiet Man

Tenía muchas ganas de conocer el pub The Quiet Man, y es que había oído hablar mucho de él (y bien). Este pub está situado entre los metros Liceu y Drassanes, en Marques de Barberá, 11. Es un bar bastante grande, aunque no tanto como el Michael Collins. Tiene una decoración muy chula, con billar y futbolín, y bastantes referencias irlandesas. Aparte de retransmitir partidos, los domingos hay música irlandesa en directo, aunque por la distribución del bar, es díficil verlo, aunque se escucha muy bien. Tiene un camarero español pero que ha estado viviendo en Irlanda, y sirve las pintas muy bien, debo decir que creo que es uno de los pubs de Barcelona donde mejor las sirven (y además, sabe bastante del tema). De precio está bastante bien, las pintas a 4,9€ y tienen bastante variedad. Yo pensé que por su nombre podía estar hermanado con el The Quiet Man de Dublín, pero parece que no. En fin, un pub al que repetiré seguro :).

I really wanted to know the pub The Quiet Man, and it is because I have listened a lot of things about it (good things). This pub is located between the metro stations Liceu and Drassanes, at Marques de Barberá, 11. It is a pretty big pub, but not as big as Michael Collins. The decoration is cool, they have billiards and a table football, and some irish references. They broadcast football matches, and on Sundays they have live irish music, but because of the shape of the pub, it is hard to watch it, but you can listen to it very well. The waiter is spanish, but he's been living in Ireland, he serves the pints very well, it is one of the pubs where they serve the pints better in Barcelona (and he knows pretty much about it), The price  is ok, the pints costt 4,9€ and they have a wide variety. I thought becaue of the name, they could have some relation with the pub The Quiet Man in Dublin, but no. So, it is a pub where I would repeat for sure :).

Barcelona Irish Pubs: Temple Bar

Este pub comparte nombre con el pub más conocido de Dublín (que no el mejor). El Temple Bar está situado justo al ladito del My Bar. Cuando ví que el staff de My Bar y Temple Bar era compartido, me temí lo peor, y es que al parecer, son del mismo dueño, y en la misma línea, pub para guiris. A diferencia de su pub vecino, el Temple Bar es un poco más amplio y con más rollito irlandés en temas de decoración, pero igualmente, te ponen los hits de verano, y lo único de irlandés es que sirven Guinness. Las camareras guiris, e igual por casualidad, alguna es irlandesa, pero parece que en el casting no lo miran mucho. Tiran las pintas rápido, y de precio normalillo, es decir, un pub orientado a gente que lo visita una vez y ya. Su pub vecino tiene la ventaja de que tiene terraza, este no. Por lo demás, más de lo mismo.

This pub shares the name with the most known pub at Dublin (but not the best). The Temple Bar is located just beside My Bar. When I saw the staff of My  Bar and Temple Bar were the same, I thought the worst, and it seems, they belong to the same owner, and in the same line, it is a pub for tourists. The difference with My Bar is that Temple Bar is a little bit bigger and a little bit more irish in decoration terms, but, they also play the summer hits, and the only irish thing they have is that they serve Guinness. The waiters are foreigners, maybe one of them irish, but they don't look much about it. They serve the pints too quickly, and the price is ok, a pub for going once and that's all. My Bar has a terrace and they don't, but for the rest, it's the same.

Barcelona Irish Pubs: My bar

La semana pasada pude visitar este pub situado cerquita de las Ramblas, a la altura del metro Liceu en la calle Ferrán (donde por cierto hay un montón de pubs irlandeses). Es un pub bastante pequeño con una terracita, e hipercentrado en el turismo. Ponen música de radio internacional y tienen grifos de varias cervezas distintas, también sirven varias marcas de sidra. La pinta de Guinness vale 5,5€, tirando a caro, y el staff es guiri pero no irlandés, lo típico, han cogido a camareras y reparteflyers guapas para atraer clientela. Es decir, es un pub para guiris tirando a caro y de irlandés poco, y con más variedad de lo normal. (Esto viene de que yo valoro cuanto de irlandés tienen estos pubs, como pub normal de las Ramblas pues bueno, pero ¿como pub irlandés? se queda en psé).

Last week I had the chance of visiting this pub located very close to las Ramblas, close to Liceu metro station, at Ferran street (where there are a few irish pubs). It's a quite small pub with a terrace and so focused at the tourists. They play international hits and they offer different brand beers, they also offer different ciders. The  pint of Guinness costs 5,5€, quite expensive, and the staff is english speaker but not irish, they have hired attractive young waiters to attract people. So, it is a pub for tourists, quite expensive and not so irish, with a quite extend variety of beers. (You know, I try to appreciate how irish the irish pubs are, so it is a standard pub of the Ramblas, but as irish pubb, I would say it is just a "ok").
