Ayer había quedado por la zona de Gracia, así que aproveché y busqué un pub irlandés por la zona para aprovechar la visita y poder escribir una nueva entrada en mi blog, navegando por internet encontré que había uno llamado Celtic Cross que ya había cerrado (parece que la crisis ha atacado a los pubs irlandeses...), pero que sin embargo había uno que continuaba abierto, que era el Ryan's, este pub pertenece a una cadena de pubs irlandeses que tienen 4 pubs en Barcelona y acaban de abrir uno en Ibiza, por lo que parece que han encontrado una fórmula bastante buena, mirando su web pude ver que organizaban eventos como Pub Quiz (igual que el Michael Collins) o Beer Pong (una especie de Ping-Pong donde tienes que meter la bola en un vaso de cerveza, y si aciertas el equipo contrario bebe), así que creo que la fórmula para llenar los bares viene siendo hacer eventos. En el pub de Gracia en concreto no anunciaban ningún evento, pero supongo que ya la zona acompaña para llenar el pub, este pub está situado en la calle Torrent de l'Olla, bastante cerca del metro Verdaguer, es un pub de tamaño medio, con dos pisos, decoración chula, como de madera desgastada, y lo que me gustó especialmente es que cada mesa estaba separada por unos asientos con respaldos muy altos, lo que te daba cierta intimidad, que siempre va bien. Al ver los precios fuera, vi que una pinta de Guinness costaba 5,5€ y pensé ¿estamos locos? aunque por el blog, lo que haga falta... pero finalmente al pagar pudimos comprobar que habían bajado a 4,9€, que muy barato no es, pero después del susto inicial, pues alegra un poquillo, también tenían ofertas de chupitos, más o menos salían a 1€ cada uno. El camarero era español, pero se tomó su tiempo en servir bien las pintas, qué menos habiendo ido a las 7 de la tarde, que no había nadie. En fin, un pub irlandés más, seguiré investigando, igual los otros de la misma cadena me sorprenden un poco más. Foto:
Yesterday I was at the area of Gracia, so I looked for an irish pub over there to take advantage of the walk and writing a new entry in the blog, surfing on the internet I found and irish pub named Celtic Cross but it was closed (it looks like the crisis is going into the irish pubs...), but anyway, there was still a pub opened over there, named Ryan's, this pub is part of a company with 4 irish pubs in Barcelona and one recently opened in Ibiza. It seems they have found a pretty good formula, checking their website, I could see they were organizing events as the Pub Quiz (the same as the Michael Collins) or Beer Pong (similar to Ping-Pong where you need to introduce the ball into a glass full of beer, if you do it, the someone from the other team drinks the glass), that is why I think the formula for getting crowded is organizing events. The pub in Gracia hadn't events announced, but I guess that in that area they don't need much to do to get crowded, this pub is located at Torrent de l'Olla street, quite close to Verdaguer station. This pub is middle size, with two floors, nice decoration, like old wood, and what I appreciated most is that there are high wood separations between tables, which gives you some privacy, which is always recommendable. When I saw the prices at the sign outside and I saw a pint of Guinness cost 5,5€ I thought are they crazy? But for the blog, whatever... Finally, when we were about to pay, he said they had lowered the prices, so it finally cost 4,9€, which is ok. They also had offers for the shots, 1€ each. The waiter was spanish, but he was good serving the pints, waiting the necessary time. In conclusion, another irish pub, I'll try to go to the other Ryan's, maybe they're better than this one. Pic:
El James Joyce es un pub situado en plena calle Alcalá, muy cerquita de Cibeles. El bar tiene una decoración muy chula la verdad, con cristaleras con distintos irlandeses célebres y distintos ambientes, todo decorado con madera, taburetes cómodos, y una gran barra de madera. Este bar me llamó la atención por su programa de intercambio de idiomas, pero la verdad es que hoy no he visto nada anunciado, así que si lo han suprimido han quitado uno de los grandes valores de este bar. Retrasmiten partidos, como el resto de bares, pero también como la mayoría de bares, no tienen música en directo (¡y por falta de espacio no es!). Así que es un bar que está muy bien, muy bonito, los camareros muy simpáticos y una atención bastante rápida pero que podría dar más de sí. Las pintas a 4,80€, precio razonable para lo que hay por ahí. Foto:
The James Joyce is a pub located at Alcala street, very close to Cibeles. This pub has a nice decoration, with irish celebrities on their glasses, and different environments, full of wood, confortable stools and a big wood bar. This pub capted my attention because of its program of language exchange, but , to be honest, today I didn't see any sign about it. So if they have removed it, this is a mistake. They broadcast sport matches, as most of the other pubs, but they don't have live music, as most of the other pubs (and it is not a problem of space). So this is a very nice pub, very friendly staff, and pretty quick, but they could do it better. Pints cost 4,80€, reasonable price for a pint. Pic:
Ayer fue un día de doble decepción... primero porque quería ir al Finnbar (calle Marqués de Urquijo) con mi hermano y ví que había cerrado y se había convertido en algo totalmente distinto a un pub irlandés, y mira que era un pub con encanto al que había ido hace un par de años (el no vivir en Madrid hace que no vaya tan frecuentemente a los sitios que me gustan), y después, quise conocer el pub "The Swan" pero ví que había cambiado de dueños, ahora lo regenta personal latinoamericano, que incluso había traducido el nombre, ahora se llama "El cisne" y que aunque sirvan pintas de Guinness, no cuela, eso de pub irlandés no tiene nada... así que por vuestro bien, ni os acerquéis, esta en la calle Ventura Rodríguez, muy cerquita de la plaza de los Cubos. Hoy voy a ir a comer al James Joyce, ¡así que espero que no lo hayan cerrado! Yesterday it was a day of double dissapointment... Firstly, because I wanted to go to the Finnbar (Marques de Urquijo street) with my brother and I saw it was closed and it has turned into something completely different to an irish pub, it was a charming pub I had visited a couple of years ago (not living at Madrid makes you not visiting the places you like as often as you would like). Afterwards, I wanted to go to "The Swan". I saw that the owners weren't the same, now it is managed by people from South America, who even had translated the name, so now it is "El Cisne", and even if they serve Guinness, that doesn't make them an irish pub. So, for all of you, save your money and don't go. This "pub" is located at Ventura Rodriguez, very close to Cubos square. Today I'm having lunch at James Joyce, I hope they're not closed! Os dije que iría al Michael Collins un lunes y así ha sido. Este lunes pasado pudimos ir y disfrutar de una maravillosa sesión de música tradicional irlandesa tocada en directo en forma de jam session, es decir, que allí la gente va con su instrumento y empiezan a tocar canción tras canción, como suelen ser las mismas, pues se las saben todos, esto es muy común en algunos bares de Irlanda también, y a mí me encanta. Y bueno, todo eso hace que este bar me encante, porque es un punto de unión con Irlanda, con su cultura. Grabé un par de vídeos así que aquí os dejo lo que se cuece en Michael Collins un lunes, y una de las razones por las que este pub este a reventar un lunes.
I told you I was going on a monday to Michael Collins and I have. The past monday we went and enjoyed an amazing session of irish traditional music played live, in a jam session, people go with their instruments and play random irish trad songs, as they're always the same songs, they all know how to play them, this is very common in irish pubs in Ireland too, and I love it. And this makes me love this pub, because it is an union point with Ireland and its culture. I recorded a couple of videos, so here you can see what happens at Michael Collins on a monday, and one of the reasons that makes this pub to be crowded on a monday.
Hoy me he acordado de este vídeo que vi hace un par de años y me encanta, es un paseo por Irlanda, vista desde el cielo, en un día soleado (esto debió ser lo más dificil). Espero que os guste y os dé tantas ganas de ir como a mí.

Ayer llovía y quedé con una amiga y la convencí para ir a un irish pub, bueno no fue exactamente en ese orden, pero con la excusa del blog, mis amigos no se resisten tanto ;). Yo quería ir a un pub que está en la calle escudellers y me llamó la atención porque los letreros de fuera están escritos en gaélico, pero al final me convenció de ir a uno más cerca: el Scobies. El Scobies está situado en la calle ronda de universitat, entre Catalunya y Universitat. Tengo que deciros que mi primera impresión no fue muy buena, lo veía un bar normalito, de madera eso sí, con música muy normalita y una camarera guiri. Yo me pedí una pinta de Guinness (¡como no!) y ella un café con Baileys, pero cuando vino la camarera y le explicó como tomar el café al estilo irlandés, la verdad es que la cosa cambió y ví que era irlandesa y que el pub empezaba a molar un poquito. Lo bueno de este bar, a diferencia de otros, es que tiene terracita, pero lo malo, es que tiene la mala costumbre como tantos otros de no hacer actividades (música en directo, pub quiz, intercambio de idiomas...), y eso hace que pierda muchos puntos. Según pasaba la tarde, se iba llenando de gente joven, aunque no guiri, aparentemente, así que algo tendrá. Para mi es un bar bastante guay pero no está en mi top 3. Foto:
Yesterday it was raining, and I was meeting a friend , so I convinced her for going to an irish pub. Well it wasn't exactly in that order, but with the excuse of the blog, most of my friends don't resist much ;). I wanted to go to a pub located at Escudellers street that I wanted to visit because they have a sign written in Gaelic at the entrance, but finally we visited a closer one: The Scobies. The Scobies is located at Ronda Universitat, between Catalunya and Universitat. I may say that the first impression wasn't very good, it was a random pub, made of wood, with radio music, and an irish waitress. I asked for a pint of Guinness (as usual) and my friend asked for a coffee with Baileys, but then the waitress came and explained to her how she should drink the coffee in the irish style, it made it a bit better. This pub has a terrace, so it makes it different from the others, but, on the wrong side, they don't organize any event (live music, language exchange, pub quiz,...). Later on, it was getting crowded, so it seems they are doing something well. In conclusion, it is a nice pub but not in my favourites. Pic:

Para los interesados en aprender irlandés, he aquí mi último descubrimiento: en Irlanda hay una escuela de verano en la que se incentiva que la gente adquiera fluidez al hablar irlandés, y suelen grabar videoclips de canciones populares (irlandesas y no irlandesas) en irlandés. Creo que es una gran manera de aprender y propulsar que se hable en este idioma. Aquí os dejo una canción de un mitiquísimo grupo irlandés: The Pogues.
If there's someone interested in learning gaelic, here I let you with my last discoverement: in Ireland there's a summer camp where they stimulate people to get fluent speaking gaelic, and they usually record videos of popular songs (irish and not irish), sung in gaelic. Ayer tuve la ocasión de ir a mi nuevo pub irlandés favorito (sin contar los de la propia Irlanda, claro está, que como en casa en ningún sitio :)). El Michael Collins está situado detrás de la sagrada familia, en la plaza sagrada familia. Es un pub bastante grande, con dos ambientes diferenciados, con una barra en cada uno de ellos. Lo que más me gusta de este bar es que suelen hacer varias cosas: tienen conciertos (los lunes de música tradicional irlandesa) casi cada día, retrasmiten partidos de fútbol y los martes hacen pub quiz (una especie de trivial por mesas que se suele hacer en Irlanda), por lo que te dan ganas de ir cada día. Aparte de eso, como parte de la decoración tiene varias fotos del propio Michael Collins y documentos de la historia de Irlanda (¡esto me ha encantado!); así que podría decir que es el pub irlandés que no está en Irlanda más irlandés en el que he estado :). Y lo mejor de todo, es que las pintas de Guinness estaban más baratas que en los demás pubs a los que he ido, a 4,5€, y por supuesto con camareros/as irlandeses/as que te sirven las pintas como es debido, con su tiempo de espera y su ángulo correcto. ¿Se puede pedir algo más? Yo creo que no. Os dejo algunas fotos de la programación de esta semana para que veáis que no exagero, yo de momento tengo que volver un lunes seguro.
Yesterday I had the chance of going to my new irish pub (not counting the ones in Ireland, of course, because there's nothing comparable to home :)). The Michael Collins is located at the back of Sagrada Familia, at the Sagrada Familia square. It is a pretty big pub, with two different environments, each one with its bar. What I like most of this pub is that they usually host events: they have live music (traditional irish music on mondays) almost every day, they broadcast football matches and they do pub quiz on tuesdays (a kind of trivial with a team on every table, they usually do it in Ireland too), so that makes you wanting to go every day. On the other hand, as part of the decoration, they have pictures of Michael Collins and documents of the Ireland history (I love that!), so I could say it is the most irish pub out of Ireland I've been :). And the best of all, the pints of Guinness are cheaper that the other pubs, 4,5€, and of course, with irish waiters serving it in a good way, waiting and with a correct angle. Can you ask for anything else? I don't think so. I will let some pictures of the program of this week for you to see I'm not exagerating. By now, I have to be back on a monday for sure.
He decidido aprender irlandés, es la segunda vez que lo decido pero esta vez más equipada y con más fuerza :). Y es que es el idioma más difícil que he visto hasta ahora (y que haya intentado aprender)... pero con paciencia y constancia todo se consigue :). Os dejo un vídeo de nociones básicas (yo ya voy un pelín más adelantada!) :).
I decided to learn gaelic, it is the second time I decided it, but this time, betterequipped and stronger :). It is the most difficult language I've seen until now (and that I've tried to learn)... but being patient and constant, you can get what you want :). I will leave a video about the basic expressions (I'm a bit more advanced!) :).
